乐队成立于1997年，最初的成员包括Gunnar Örn Tynes和Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason，后来加入了双胞胎姐妹Gyða和Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir。根据Kristín的说法，乐队的名字并没有特别的含义。Gyða在发行了《Finally We Are No One》后离开乐队继续学业。2006年初，Kristín也离开了乐队，尽管直到11月23日才正式公布。只剩下Tynes和Smárason留在乐队中，他们吸纳了一大批新乐手：吉他手/歌手/小提琴手Ólöf Arnalds，小号/键盘手Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson，歌手/大提琴手Hildur Guðnadóttir，打击乐手Samuli Kosminen和多乐器演奏者/歌手Mr. Silla。新的乐手团队在2006年录制了他们的第四张专辑，即《Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy》，并于2007年9月24日发行。
Múm于2007年11月与德国音乐家Volker “Hauschka” Bertelmann一起在美国东海岸进行了巡演。他们在2008年春季带着同样的曲目回归。两次巡演都包括《Go, Go Smear the Poison Ivy》专辑中的歌曲。
2008年8月27日，他们在官方网站上宣布：”múm正在悄悄地但肯定地制作他们的新专辑。尚未确定具体发布日期，但每一天都会使其更近。”Múm还在他们的MySpace页面上发布了一些在录音过程中的照片。
2009年5月22日在西班牙布尔戈斯的一场音乐会上，Múm演奏了他们最新专辑《Sing Along to Songs You Don’t Know》中的歌曲。该专辑在芬兰、爱沙尼亚和冰岛录制，并于2009年8月17日以下载形式在Gogoyoko上发布，8月24日以CD形式发行。
2011年12月，Múm发布了名为《Gleðileg Jól》（冰岛语中的圣诞节快乐）的EP，其中包含两首传统冰岛圣诞歌曲和一首额外的曲目。
2012年6月1日，Múm发布了一张名为《Early Birds》的合辑，包括1998年至2000年间录制的15首曲目。2013年2月9日，他们与Kylie Minogue合作的曲目《Whistle》在SoundCloud上公开。
Múm于2013年9月发行了他们的第六张专辑《Smilewound》，提供CD、黑胶唱片和数字下载。9月7日，《Smilewound》还以K7带的形式发行，以庆祝”Cassette Store Day”。
2019年，Morr Music庆祝múm首张专辑《Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK》发行20周年，并重新发行了这张专辑。随后，Múm在欧洲和中国进行了巡演，并宣布2020年3月和4月将进行一次美国巡演。
评价
主流媒体对Múm乐队的评价普遍较高。Múm的音乐总是有着层出不穷的音乐创意和独到的配器，各种乐器在演出中碰撞出新奇而震撼的效果。除了常见的钢琴、吉他、提琴之外，还有许多传统的民族乐器加入其中，必要时他们甚至会自己设计制作乐器从而制造出奇特的音色。尽管乐队成军初期成员年龄仅有十几岁，却已显露出强大的创作天赋，而那些充满诗意甚至令人毛骨悚然的标题或词句，又让其作品透出一股暗色调却引人入胜的魔力。
他们的专辑《Yesterday WasDramatic – Today Is OK》在冰岛引起了强烈的反响，甚至被MUZIK Magazine选为当月最佳专辑。此外，他们的单曲《The Ballad of the Broken Birdie Records》也受到了国际媒体和乐迷们的热烈欢迎。
然而，Múm乐队的音乐风格也在不断变化中，他们尝试过多种音乐类型的融合，包括民谣、电子、ambience等等。这种不断的探索和创新，使得他们的音乐充满了新鲜感和惊喜。
