弗兰克·扎帕原名弗兰克·文森特·扎帕（Frank Vincent Zappa），1940年生于巴尔的摩，是美国六十年代摇滚乐发展史上的先锋人物之一。1960年出版了第一张唱片，不过是为一部电影做的插曲。随后他又为电影配乐使得他有钱自己买了一间录音棚。1964年他和与他共事的乐手组成了一支乐队“Mothers”。1966年乐队推出了双专辑《Freak Out!》。体现了乐队“嬉皮“的风格，也使人们对他们有了更深的印象。在这张专辑中，扎帕在录音方面比同时期的其他乐手到要先进。1966年出版专辑《Absoulately Free》，1967年出版专辑《We’re Only In It For the Money》。1969年出版个人专辑《Hot Rats》，这张专辑使他获得了“出色的爵士摇滚音乐家”的称号。在此后的多张专辑中他尝试了多样的主题和手法，使专辑呈现出不同的特色。1968年他与他的经理人组建了自己唱片公司，并推出一些亲手提拔的一些乐队。在此后推出了一些个人专辑如1975年的《Bongo Fury》，1978的《Zappa in New》。此后，扎帕解除了同公司的合同并建立了自己的公司Zappa。1979年推出了经典作品《Joe’s Garage Act I》《Joe’s Garage Act II & III》。到了八十年代他几乎每年都出一张专辑，并写了一部音乐剧和一部卡通片。虽然也有失败的地方，但他依然被公认为是一位摇滚大师。1991年扎帕被查出患有癌症，但他依然不停的出专辑直到他1993年12月去世。
1993年12月4日（星期六），弗兰克·扎帕在他的家中去世，当时他的妻子和孩子都在他身边。在次日的私人葬礼上，扎帕被埋葬在洛杉矶韦斯特伍德村纪念公园公墓的一个没有标记的坟墓里。12月6日，他的家人公开宣布“作曲家弗兰克·扎帕于星期六下午6时之前前往他的最后一场巡演”。
扎帕在他的生前身后都赢得了广泛的一致好评。《滚石专辑指南》（2004年）中写道：“弗兰克·扎帕涉足了几乎所有种类的音乐，无论他是否是作为一个讽刺摇滚乐手、融合爵士乐手、吉他演奏大师、电子乐奇才还是管弦乐的创新者，他古怪的天才是不容置疑的。”尽管他的作品从许多不同的流派汲取灵感，扎帕的音乐表达被认为是连贯有逻辑且具有个人特点的。
1971年，传记作者David Walley指出：“他的音乐结构是统一的，而非根据时间或时期划分的，他的所有音乐都成为了一个综合体”。2004年，在评论扎帕的音乐、政治、哲学观点时，Barry Miles指出它们不能分开来谈：“这是一个整体，在概念上具有连续性。”
