莱昂纳德·科恩 Leonard Cohen（1934年9月21日－2016年11月07日），飘泊在现代都市的游吟诗人，来自寒冷然而富有浓厚欧洲气息的加拿大小城蒙特利尔，英国文学是他的专业。早年以诗歌和小说在文坛成名，小说《美丽失落者》被评论家誉为60年代的经典之作。很偶然的机缘将他带入民谣流域，在Judy Collins的帮助下，将他的诗作配上简单的和弦，开始游吟生涯。以一颗敏感而细腻的诗人之心使民谣的情感表达和对生命细微处的沉思发挥到极致，而他独有的沙哑嗓音犹如历尽沧桑却又不忍弃绝尘世的智者，娓娓叙述着一个个夹杂着黑色幽默与宗教冥想的故事。科恩的嗓音具有犹太拉比一般不可置疑的魔力，不经意间将我们带回时间深处的记忆，直接面对灵魂细微的颤动，沉溺于美丽的遐想之中。
1934年，Leonard Cohen出生在加拿大蒙特利尔一个犹太中产家庭，在他9岁时父亲就去世了。13岁时，他第一次拿起吉他，目的是为了给某个女孩留下印象，但在一两年后，他就开始在当地的咖啡馆演唱自己的歌。后来，Cohen就读于McGill大学，主修英文。17岁那年，他组建了一支叫做the Buckskin Boys的3人西部乡村乐队，同时，他开始写诗。当第一本诗集在1956年出版时，Cohen还是一名大学肄业生。
在纽约哥伦比亚大学经历过一小段节衣缩食生活之后，Cohen获得了一笔家族遗产使他可以过得很安逸。而他，也毫不犹豫地过上了这种生活：沉湎女色，服用兴奋剂以及周游世界。Cohen开始在欧洲旅行，最后在希腊的一座岛上落脚，和一个女人与她的儿子一起生活。在希腊的7年时间里，他写了两本诗集和两部小说。如今，每本书都已卖出了超过100万本。
但是地中海的温暖阳光并不能平复Cohen躁动不安的心。“在写书的时候，你不得不呆在一个地方，”1988年他接受《音乐人》杂志采访时说，“当你写一本小说的时候，总是希望一些东西包围着你。你的生活中需要一个女人，充满了美酒佳肴，而且最好还有孩子们，以及一个干净整洁的地方。而我已经拥有了这些，然后，我决定成为一个唱作人。
离开了舒适的家庭式生活之后，他回到美国，在音乐重镇纳什维尔附近安顿下来，准备开始他的音乐生涯。当时已经开始走红的民谣女歌手Judy Collins，翻唱了他的“Suzanne”，结果大受欢迎，成为电台热门歌曲和她最流行的代表曲目之一，于是她说服Cohen一起参加民谣巡演。在1967年夏天的纽约新港民谣节期间，Cohen首次登台亮相，并在CBS电视网节目上演唱自己的歌曲并朗诵了诗作。
Cohen与哥伦比亚唱片公司签约，于1968年初出版了他的首张唱片《The Songs of Leonard Cohen》，尽管制作简单、内容抑郁，但它在那个民谣盛行、唱作人风潮刚刚开始兴起的时代马上就大热起来，成千上万的大学生都买了这张唱片。
1968年，Cohen出版了诗选集《Selected Poems: 1956-1968》。它为他赢得了加拿大文学界的最高荣誉：总督奖。但他迅速地拒绝了这项荣誉。
1969-1972年期间，Cohen接连出版了第2、3张专辑《Songs from A Room》、《Songs of Love and Hate》，和第一张现场唱片《Live Songs》。但在商业上和评论上都大不如前。
1973年专辑《New Skin For the Old Ceremony》依然充满着阴沉和黯淡的情绪，继续深入细述了闺房里的隐秘搏斗，而封面使用中世纪的宗教情色插画，当时在美国被禁。
1977年，Cohen推出了他最受争议的专辑《Death of a Ladies Man》，它是与著名制作人Phil Spector（以神秘与隐居著称，监制过包括The Beatles在内的许多著名乐队唱片）合作的，但到了最后的制作阶段Cohen却被排除在外。“这是个灾难，”Cohen回忆说，“那些涂鸦般的歌声混音工作，是Phil Spector在警卫守护下秘密进行的。我当时想，要么派一支私人军队去攻打位于日落大道的录音棚，要么就算了。我就算了。”

1988年初，Cohen为Jennifer Warnes制作了那张街知巷闻的唱片《Famous Blue Raincoat》（著名的蓝雨衣）（它比Cohen的任何一张唱片都要卖得好）。54岁Cohen的声线变得极富吸引力，低沉而性感，而那融合了黑色幽默、悲观色彩和诗歌意识的歌曲更是引人入迷，而这张唱片是他这10年来销量最好的专辑。
1992年，Cohen发表了专辑《The Future》，细述了一个男人面对余下岁月的恐惧感。在完成专辑巡演之后，Cohen大部分时间都在南加州Baldy修道院里修炼禅道，法号Jikan（意思是沉默的一个），主要的活动是冥想和给他的导师做饭。
1999年，结束了将近5年的修道生活，Cohen带着近百首新诗和歌词下山了。他立刻开始和Sharon Robinson（一个著名的幕后歌手，曾与Cohen共同创作了名曲“Everybody Knows”、“Waiting for the Miracle”）着手新歌的工作。
2001年10月，在隔了8年之后，Cohen终于发表了最新创作专辑。和早期那些唱片一样，它有一个简单而又纯粹的名字：《Ten New Songs》。这是一张弥漫着告别气息的歌曲集，充满了个人自白，挽歌式的感叹，一些轻微的抗议声，和禅意。它，看上去就像是个句号。
2004年10月发行《Dear Heather》,大部分都是和爵士女歌手Anjani Thomas（目前的伴侣）的合作。《Dear Heather》反应了科恩内心的转变，他不止一次的在访谈中提到，他的忧郁在近些年得到了释放，他将此归功于自己对于佛家禅宗的皈依。在入选加拿大唱作名人堂的访谈中，他将这本专辑解释为各种主题的草稿本，不久后将计划发行一本更加正式的专辑。但是这让他和前经理人的官司雪上加霜，科恩最终没有对该专辑进行任何的宣传推广。
2006年Anjani和科恩推出了一同创作并由Anjani演唱的《Blue Alert》，收到了良好的评价，一名乐评人写到“听上去就像科恩重生为女人一般……尽管科恩没有自己演唱，而他的声音像烟一样弥漫笼罩了整本专辑”。
2008年1月13日，科恩平静的宣布了他将开展一次长期的巡回演出，这是其15年来首次进行巡演。2008年6月29日科恩参加了格拉斯顿伯里音乐节，他几乎成为整次音乐节的中心，当太阳下山时，科恩开始演唱《Hallelujah》，台下报以狂热的反应以及长时间的欢呼。
2009年3月21日，科恩08年在伦敦O2体育馆的演出被制作成《Live in London》专辑并发行，其中包括两张CD和一张DVD，这是科恩第一次正式发行DVD。
2009年在西班牙巴伦西亚的演出中，在表演《Bird on Wire》到一半时，科恩在舞台上突然晕倒，被送往当地医院进行治疗，演出被迫中断。报道称科恩是因为食物中毒引起的身体不适。三天后9月21日，科恩在巴塞罗那进行表演，这天是科恩75岁的生日，因为流传这可能是科恩在欧洲巡演的最后一站，演出吸引了大量欧洲各地的歌迷，听众在台下点起绿色的蜡烛为科恩庆祝生日。
2009年9月24日，科恩在以色列特拉维夫的Ramat Gan体育馆进行演出，这次演出因为文化原因在以色列受到了一部分音乐人的抵制，然而演出票却在不到24小时内预售一空。演出前科恩声明，全场4万7千张票的票款全部捐献给了国际特赦组织和巴以问题和平组织，用于改善儿童健康服务和促成以色列老兵，前巴勒斯坦战士与冲突中受难者家属的会面。
2010年9月14日，发行了演唱会专辑《Songs from the Road》，内容便是关于08，09年的演出实录。
2012发行专辑《Old Ideas》，这是科恩的第12本录音室专辑，后来成为科恩唱作生涯上打榜成绩最好的一部作品，在澳大利亚，挪威，芬兰，荷兰，新西兰，西班牙多国的排行上都升至第一。专辑几乎受到一致好评，滚石杂志，芝加哥论坛报，卫报都做出的肯定的评价，纽约时报的记者Jon Pareles评价这本专辑，“道德在科恩的脑海中占到了很大的比重，正如这本专辑的歌曲表现出的一样;这本晚期专辑，沉思于回忆与最终考量，并且还从中透露着别样的微光。它又一次揪住了科恩先生终其一生所思考的议题：爱情，欲望，信仰，背叛和救赎。其中的措辞是圣经一般，而有些却是故作正经的嘲讽。”
2012年8月12日，科恩开始新一轮的欧洲巡演宣传《Old Ideas》，之后巡演又延续到美国，加拿大，澳大利亚和新西兰。
2014年9月19日，科恩发行了第13本录音室专辑《Popular Problems》，这天是他80岁生日后的两天。专辑在29个国家的iTunes排行榜上占据了第一的位置，而在另外15个国家中都登上了Top5。
2016年11月10日逝世，享年82岁。
