安德鲁·拉蒂默（吉他），安迪·沃德（鼓）和道格·弗格森（贝斯）曾经在英国萨里郡的吉尔福德地区以一个名为“The Brew”的三人组合演奏。早在1971年初，他们试镜成为歌手/词曲作者菲利普·古德汉德-泰特的后备乐队，并出现在他的专辑《I Think I’ll Write a Song》中，该专辑由DJM唱片公司发行。然后他们招募了键盘手彼得·巴登斯，在一次满足巴登斯承诺的首场演出之后，他们将自己的名字改为“Camel”。他们以这个名字的第一场演出是在1971年12月伦敦的沃尔瑟姆森林技术学院支持Wishbone Ash。
1972年8月，Camel与MCA唱片公司签约，并在1973年初发布了同名的首张专辑《Camel》。这张唱片并没有取得成功，于是乐队转到Decca唱片公司（英国）旗下的Deram Records部门。1974年，他们发行了第二张专辑《Mirage》，备受好评，拉蒂默在其中展示了自己精通长笛的才华。虽然在英国未能进入排行榜，但它在美国取得了成功，促使乐队在那里进行了为期三个月的巡演。
1975年发行的概念专辑《The Snow Goose》是一张令Camel获得更广泛关注和成功的突破性唱片，灵感来自保罗·加利科同名短篇小说。然而，这张专辑引起了加利科的诉讼。据报道，加利科提起诉讼是因为他“厌恶吸烟”，认为乐队与香烟品牌有关。实际上，加利科将自己描述为“对所有最黑暗形式的恶习都沉迷不已”，他的反对只是基于版权侵权的理由。因此，Camel在专辑封面前添加了“音乐灵感来自…”的前缀，并从后封面中删除了故事说明。该专辑的成功使他们在1975年10月与伦敦交响乐团一起在皇家阿尔伯特音乐厅进行了备受赞誉的演出。
该乐队的第四张专辑《Moonmadness》（1976年）是最后一张由原始阵容演奏的专辑。随后的巡回演出中，他们增加了萨克斯和长笛手Mel Collins。鼓手Ward推动向爵士音乐方向发展，这导致贝斯手Ferguson在1977年初退出了乐队。Ferguson组建了Headwaiter乐队，并后来成为房地产开发商。
Richard Sinclair（曾是Caravan乐队的成员）取代了Ferguson，Mel Collins正式加入了乐队。这个阵容发行了《Rain Dances》（1977年）和《Breathless》（1978年）。后者是最后一张由Bardens参与制作的专辑，在支持巡演之前他宣布离开了乐队。他被两位键盘手取代，都是从Caravan招募来的：Dave Sinclair（Richard的表兄弟）和Jan Schelhaas。 Sinclair表兄弟在巡回演出后都离开了乐队，由键盘手Kit Watkins和贝斯手Colin Bass取代。这个阵容录制了更商业化的专辑《I Can See Your House from Here》（1979年），专辑封面由Gered Mankowitz拍摄和设计，是一个经过处理的照片图像，描绘了一个被钉在十字架上的宇航员正在注视地球。
Camel被认为是20世纪80年代出现的新前卫摇滚亚流派中最主要的影响者之一，这个亚流派孕育了Marillion作为其中最成功的乐队。前Marillion主唱Fish谈到他对该乐队的第一印象时说：“我觉得他们很像Camel。”
阿根廷乐队Rockaphonia的专辑《Fuera de Tiempo》包含了三首Camel致敬翻唱曲目。以色列的乐队The Humps经常演奏该乐队的一些作品。另一个名为Fritha（取自《雪鹅》专辑中的歌曲）的乐队在日本表演Camel的作品。瑞典有一支名为Lady Fantasy（取自《幻象》专辑中的歌曲）的乐队。伊朗的一支名为Raha的乐队在演奏Camel的歌曲。
在埃及，Andromida也在他们的演出中翻唱了Camel的歌曲。2010年，挪威的前卫摇滚乐队Mirage（以Camel第二张专辑的名称命名）在一组Yes、Jethro Tull和King Crimson作品中包括了Camel的歌曲。在黎巴嫩，一个叫做Babel（就像“巴比伦”）的乐队于2011年10月28日即兴演奏了Camel的歌曲“Storm Clouds”。瑞典前卫死亡金属乐队Opeth的Mikael Åkerfeldt表示Camel对他们的歌曲“Hessian Peel”有影响，并且之前还开玩笑说他们的Damnation（2003）专辑是从Camel抄袭来的，在Lamentations（Live at Shepherd’s Bush Empire 2003）DVD上这样说过。
Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree曾经提到Camel对他的音乐有影响。在2013年的一次采访中，他表达了重新混音经典Camel专辑的兴趣。Latimer在同年回应Wilson的兴趣时持积极态度。
Rick Astley在2016年接受Billboard采访时提到，Camel巡演”The Snow Goose”是他参加的第一场音乐会，称其“震撼了我”。
The Tangent的Andy Tillison为致敬Camel录制了一首名为”Music Inspired by Music Inspired by The Snow Goose”的歌曲，并收录于他2016年个人专辑(Machte Es) Durch中。
