西藏宗教音乐是唯一具有悠久书面历史的中亚曲目符号。此符号用于礼仪圣歌，由纽姆——即表示旋律轮廓而非精确音高的符号，类似于中世纪欧洲最早的音乐作品。藏传佛教音乐的形而上学方面也与众不同，与印度哲学有关。寺院管弦乐队的每种乐器以及吟诵的长音都被认为是一种外在形式。咒语，即人体固有的声音，只有通过坚定的冥想才能获得。对于僧侣来说，这种音乐是虔诚和祈祷的基本辅助。藏传佛教各教派的音乐风格略有不同，但基本方法和乐器是相同的。

寺院的法器代表了西藏的十字路口地位。一些法器，比如大型的钹，起源于中国，而其他（大多数），如海螺壳喇叭和手摇铃可追溯到印度的影响，并被远至日本的佛教徒用作祭祀乐器。其它乐器，例如大型双簧乐器和长长的（通常为 5.5 至 10 英尺 [1.7 至 3 米]）金属喇叭，可能起源于中东。有一种管乐器，即用人腿骨制成的短喇叭，似乎纯粹是当地发明的。同样，音乐的结构似乎基本上是藏族音乐。它建立在非常长时间的密集、深沉的声音原则之上，例如长喇叭和短喇叭与双簧管的齐奏或僧侣群体看似无休止的低音吟唱，他们拖长的音符被尖锐的延长打击乐声打断。据说每个僧侣可以同时唱两个甚至三个音符。
大部分这种音乐只在节日期间从修道院中流传出来，那时伟大的’cham（舞蹈）戏剧可能会持续数天，是为了公众的娱乐和教化而表演的。这些戏剧通常表现佛教对苯教是西藏早期的萨满教，可能有数百名音乐家以面具舞者的身份参加，他们手持鼓乐，由大型寺庙管弦乐队伴奏。其他类型的公共音乐也比比皆是，比如世俗的、可能与中国有关的历史剧，其中对话和歌曲交替进行，并有管弦乐伴奏。民间舞蹈的传统也很浓厚，可能包括由混合对唱合唱团（即两个交替的歌手组）演唱的歌曲。吟游诗人沿着商队路线做生意，演奏的乐器可能与中亚传统更相关，而不是与印度和中国的宗教音乐背景。
