上世纪50年代末，发源于美国的早期摇滚开始走向衰落，英国逐渐接过了推动摇滚乐发展的大旗。当1964年英伦入侵运动爆发时，在美国，本土孕育的、更具娱乐性的冲浪音乐和传统布鲁斯摇滚乐仍充斥着市场。但美国的年轻一代并没有停止在摇滚乐中继续探索个性和反叛。比起更“绅士”的英国偶像们，这些美国摇滚乐手多是十几岁的少年，他们没有精湛的创作技巧和丰富的演奏经验，凭着一腔热血，在自家车库里，把失真的吉他声开大，排练着简单、粗糙、短小、充满喊叫的摇滚乐。从1965年开始，这场车库摇滚运动在美国和加拿大迅速席卷开来。
与英伦入侵类似，车库摇滚（Garage rock）并不能算是一种音乐风格，在当时并没有一种特定的命名。风格上，民谣摇滚、迷幻摇滚各种都有。虽然车库摇滚也催生了The Sonics, The Monks, MC5, The Stooges等一些重要乐队，在短短几年时间里出版了大量唱片。但第一波车库摇滚从来没被当时的主流评论重视过。在评论界的不屑一顾和冷嘲热讽中，很多车库乐队默默无闻的解散，或者改变风格去演奏更为主流的迷幻摇滚，车库摇滚运动也于1968年迅速落下帷幕。不过，车库摇滚的原始、冲动和力量已经被种在了人们心中。车库摇滚的故事并没有结束。
1972年，Elektra唱片公司老板Jac Holzman和后来成为Patti Smith Group主音吉他的Lenny Kaye整理出版了双LP合辑《Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968》。虽然这张合辑打着迷幻摇滚的旗号，收录的作品也不全是车库摇滚作品。但它是对1965-1968年第一波车库摇滚运动的见证和纪念，对于定义这一风格做出了巨大贡献。在这张合辑的文案中，用到了“朋克摇滚”（Punk-rock）一词。此后，一些美国摇滚评论家开始用“朋克摇滚”来追溯和描述这一流派。这张合辑不仅引发了1972年第二次车库浪潮，还直接启发了70年代末的朋克浪潮和21世纪初的车库复兴运动。随着朋克音乐的兴起，到20世纪80年代，这一流派诞生近20年后，“车库摇滚”一词才慢慢受到评论家的青睐，“车库摇滚”或者“原型朋克”（Proto-punk）正式成为这一摇滚流派的名称。
